The Mill River comes alive this time of year as many species of ducks journey from their northerly summer homes to spend the winter on Long Island. We’ll use a spotting scope to get a closer look at these beautiful visitors.

The Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery invites the public to attend the sixth Rebuild by Design (RBD) Living with the Bay (LWTB) Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting at Knights of Columbus in Oceanside, NY on May 23, 2017. The CAC is a group of stakeholders assembled by the State to serve an important advisory role in planning and implementing the LWTB Program. At this meeting, GOSR and its consultant will provide an update on recent activities related to the LWTB program and the CAC will be presented with the list of prioritized LWTB projects.

Horseshoe Crab Adventure
When:  Thursday, June 8, 2017
Time:   6:30pm – 7:30pm
Where: Bay Park, East Rockaway

Each June, the full moon draws thousands of horseshoe crabs to Long Island's estuarine beaches to mate and lay eggs. Join Seatuck Environmental Association for an evening walk along the shoreline in search of this ancient spectacle.

In Search of Dragons
When:  Saturday, July 29, 2017
Time:   10:00am – 11:30am
Where: Hempstead Lake State Park, South Pond (Parking Field 2)

Dragons do exist, but we'll need nets instead of swords to get a close-up look at this fierce predator. We'll learn all about the incredible dragonfly and the important role it plays in the ecosystem.

Living with the Bay Family Water Fair on Freeport's Nautical Mile

Family Water Fair on Freeport's Nautical Mile

Who: Adults and children of all ages (everyone!)

Join the fun at Operation Splash on the afternoon of May 20, 2017, and learn about the Living with the Bay (LWTB) program. Established after Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of Long Island, LWTB aims to improve drainage and enhance natural resources to minimize the area’s risk from flooding and damage to life and property along the Mill River in Nassau County. Stop by and find out about the upcoming LWTB projects! While the parents are learning about LWTB, the kids will enjoy fun, interactive games and activities that teach about water and our ecosystem. Best of all, it’s free! Don’t miss it!

 

Seatuck/Living with the Bay Nature Walks - Spring 2017

Spring Botany Walk
When:  Saturday, May 20, 2017
Time:   9:00am – 11:00am
Where: Hempstead Lake State Park, North Ponds (Parking Field 1, northeast corner)

Join Seatuck on a botanical ramble through the beautiful woodlands and wetlands of the Mill River's upper reaches. Learn about the local plant life on a leisurely walk to observe swelling buds, some early blooms and other signs of spring at the river's edge.

Migrating Songbirds
When:  Saturday, May 6, 2017
Time:   8:00am – 9:00am
Where: Hempstead Lake State Park, North Ponds (Parking Field 1, northeast corner)

The spring bird migration is in full swing and the woodlands around the Mill River are filled with songbirds. Join us to enjoy the beautiful colors and melodious songs of these miniature migrants.
